Stakeholders and trade-offs at One NZ stadium

Christchurch’s One New Zealand Stadium opened on 27 March 2026 after a major construction project involving almost 4,000 workers and around 2.4 million collective work hours. The stadium has also created opportunities for local businesses, with food and beverage vendors earning more than $700,000 in its first six days of operation.

Major projects bring together stakeholders with different interests and priorities. From those involved in delivering or funding a project to those affected by its outcomes, understanding these perspectives helps explain why decisions often involve trade-offs.

Try our One NZ Stadium Activity Card and get students to identify the project's stakeholders, explore their different priorities and consider a trade-off the project team might face.
